There’s a lot going on in the world.
Not surprisingly, my mental and physical health has been affected.
While I hope to write more about it, one of the good things that has happened since my last Dinner Table Digest is that I have been diagnosed with ADHD, Inattentive Type 2. One of my most paralyzing symptoms is chronic executive dysfunction. This often keeps me from starting projects, simply because I can’t manage the ‘oomph’ necessary to start a project, both physically and mentally. As a result, all my greatest intentions result in a backlog of projects that not only never get started, but also gather dust on some mental shelf, ready to torment me with the shame of being ‘a quitter’ at a moment’s notice.
As if to illustrate my point, between the paragraph above the line and this paragraph sits an entire 48 hours. I got distracted with something - I think it was an attempt to find a meme about executive dysfunction - and whooooosh! just like that, it’s gone.
The diagnosis of ADHD puts a LOT of my life into perspective. As I begin to understand how to manage my executive dysfunction and hyperfixations through both therapy and pharmaceuticals, I am hoping to have better ability to pick up my writing. This post is intended primarily to ‘Break the Seal’ on my writing again, with the hope that new approaches to managing my whole health will pay dividends. From my chronic pain and continued abdominal issues to the cornucopia of mental health challenges that come along with chronic physical illness, there is a lot that goes into managing my day-to-day.
If you haven't already followed me on Twitter or Facebook you should do that today, since that's where most of my rough and ready commentary is found.
