Dinner Table Digest: Abortion Edition
In this edition I'll highlight a few important pieces on the likely repeal of Roe v. Wade in the United States, bringing the abortion debate home to Canada as well
While I like to avoid prognosticating when writing a Digest in order to let the pieces I’ve selected speak for themselves, I do want to note that when I was 16/17 years old I was a card-carrying member of the pro-life (sic) movement, and participated in several conferences and marches. Based on my experiences, I am not joking when I say that the movement, whose members I now call anti-abortionists, does not care how considered your arguments in favour of ‘safe, legal, and rare’ might be. They do not care that abortions actually save the lives of mothers. They consider all abortions to be murder of the cruelest sort, and they care about only one thing. In the words of Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff, they want abortion to become “unthinkable in our lifetime.”
How cruel are conservatives/Republicans willing to be?
They envision the complete criminalization and punishment of all forms of pregnancy termination, no matter the circumstances. Some are also calling for a ban on IUDs.
